If you have to pump the pedal to get a good feel, and that feel stays good
until you release the pedal, re-adjust the back brakes and try again.
Pumping the pedal compensates for brake shoes that have to travel a ways to
engage the drum. Releasing the pedal allows the brakes to return. The rear
brakes are released by spring pressure, and this in turn pushes in the wheel
cylinder and the extra fluid from pumping returns to the master cylinder,
via the compensation port.
