Nathaniel,
You are not paranoid, you are appropriately cautious. The collision with the
piston could easily have bent the valve, even if ever so slightly.
Both the engine and the head need to be in the hands of a competent machine
shop. The head should be bolted and torqued to the head, and the camshaft
rotation should be checked to mke sure it is free. It probably is not. I
do not know what remedial action can be taken -- perhaps shimming the cam
towers to bring things into line will suffice, but that is beyond my
expertise.
