My dash (1970) had a JC Whitley dash cover glued to the original which had
several cracks in it. In the process of removing the old cover in pieces the
original covering came off in places which exposed the foam surface. I have
a new dash cover and will be using a 3-M adhesive (not the stuff they sent
me with the new cover) to install the new cover. My question is, should I
apply some type of filler to smooth out the surface before installing the
new cover? If so, does anyone have a suggestion as to what I should use? I
think it should be something that stays flexible but wouldnt come loose
from the foam. Any help is appreciated.
Update: Several years ago a friend was helping me rotate the body which was
installed on a rotary fixture. Instead of holding the body in position he
let it go and the car did a very fast 180 degree spin and the windshield
frame struck the concrete floor in my garage. Ouch! The impact pushed the
windshield frame > of an inch to the right. Last Saturday an auto body
repair friend came over and helped me straighten out the frame. Before we
started I placed an old windshield in the frame to see just how bad out of
alignment the frame was. We heated both sides of the frame and using a 2x4
and a rubber mallet I whacked the frame 5 times. We let the frame cool and
again installed the glass. Fits like a glove!!!!!! The true test will be to
install both doors and see if the gap is the same on both sides. I can now
stop having nightmares about my windshield frame.
