My dad spent 2-1/2 years or so in North Africa and Italy with the 1st Armored
Division (Old Ironsides), being shot at by the Wehrmacht and the Luftwaffe, and
when I was in high school (closer to the end of WWII than we are now to the end
of the Vietnam War...) he made me get rid of my "surfer's cross" - a St
Christopher medal set in a Maltese cross.
He mellowed, though - the last vehicle he bought before he died was a VW Camper
Van; and you could have knocked me over with a feather.
Hard to understand, maybe, for those of us who didn't live through it - but
having grown up with someone who did, I respect their feelings on the matter.

While the design of the Rising Sun may appeal to some, it harbors some of the
same sentiment as the Swastika to others. Heck, even the "Iron Cross"
or Maltese Cross wheels on the Z's in later years caused some to remove them
just because of the association with WWI Germany.
Apologies to anyone that may take offense to this, as that is not my intent.
