Yes.

Uh, because they didn't design it that way. The axle housing doesn't do
anything except support the gear carrier assembly. Both the pinion gear and the
ring gear mount to the gear carrier. That way you can set up the lash on the
workbench and not under the car.

More or less. It's a snug fit and is probably cooked in there pretty solidly. A
certain amount of percussive maintenance is usually required to break it loose.
Whacking the nose of the diff from various angles with a dead-blow hammer
usually works. Position a floor jack under the gear carrier just ahead of the
axle housing so the thing doesn't drop on your hand when it comes loose - it's
fairly heavy.
