Does anyone know if Autozone loans a bore scope for checking inside the
engine? If so that could be handy.

Three others have already mentioned this - make me number 4.
The piston is hitting the head. Been there, done that.
If yo can shine some light in the spark plug hole, I'm betting
you'll see scuffs on the piston dome where it's been pounding.
