Hi all,
Thanks to everyone for all the responses. I've got a better
understanding of how the bendix works now.
Last night I took the starter off
the engine and engaged it by jumping the two posts on the solenoid. The first
few times I did it the gear never flung out. After 5-6 times of doing this it
started to move and eventually it started to fling out right as I jumped the
posts. So I put it back on and tried it and now it sounds like the bendix
gear is touching the flywheel teeth then backing off. I hear a slight
grinding/rubbing sound for a split second then it just whirs. So my question
is, should the bendix gear be spinning full speed the whole time or should it
speed up after it engages the flywheel? Mine starts spinning very fast before
it flings out. Could this be the reason it's not engaging the flywheel
teeth? It seems to me that if it's spinning that fast that it wouldn't have a
chance to engage the flywheel and would just grind against the teeth then pull
back.
Any thoughts?
Matt Peterson
