I have been using 20W 3-in-1 motor oil for nearly 40 years. Seems to
work fine. I may try ATF to see if there is a difference, though.

It doesn't have to be specifically dash pot oil. As long as it's the
correct
weight most any oil will do. ATF, MMM, Power steering fluid, engine
oil,
motorcycle fork oil all work well. 3 in 1 and WD-40 don't work so well.
