Pat,
I've used mine several times without inci"dent", also. I set the base on a
piece of thin rubber and lean it back away from the door slightly to begin
with. However, I recently acquired one in a box of spare parts, and it's
twisted! Apparently they like to fall sideways as well as dig into the doors.
Perhaps we are just lucky?
Unfortunately, Nathaniel, this twisted boat anchor did not come with a crank. I
have seen them on eBay a time or two. Usually in parts lots.

the factory jacks are for show only and
not for actual use. They are very good at digging into the doors when
the car decides to move. Having said that, I have used mine several
times without any problems. YMMV.
Peace,
Pat
