I use the same method, just with the pickle fork. The coil spring helps to
separate the joint. Just make sure you have plenty of thread. No need to
loosen the nut much.
Pickle fork won't damage the ball joint but, will tear up the dust boot. Good
excuse to order some polyurethene dust boots. Dean sells them. Other vendors
may sell them, also.
Autozone loans tools for free so, that's yet another option.
Once the joint is separated, I like to use a coil spring compressor for added
safety. Also, a free loan at Autozone.
