Can't see any problem with isolating the case from the paintwork, as long as
it is a mechanical isolation only.
Just make sure the mounting screws are still electrically connected to the
case and car body.
As an alternative, you might consider using 4 rubber feet or grommets, 1 at
each corner to achieve that isolation.
"i'm about to attach the regulator? which sits far forward on the passenger
side (big electrical box).
i'd like to put a rubber pad under it to protect the paint. there wasn't
one there before. is this a good idea/bad idea?"
