Depends on whether you feel the need to put the top up on short notice,
or not. Lots of guys never have a top in their car, up or down; if it
rains they grin and bear it.
Personally, I always have the top in the car, in the down position, with
a tonneau cover over it. If it rains, or my wife demands relief from the
hot sun or cold fog, then the top goes up. In my case, the tonneau was
fitted for a top in the down position.
Maybe you can get her to gift you with a 2nd tonneau cover, perhaps a
half-tonneau to use with a top, while the 1st tonneau is fitted without
a top in the car. (You're lucky to get the one, my wife would ask me "is
this the last thing you're buying?".)

Subject: Tonneau cover question
For a wedding anniversary gift, my wife gave me a tonneau cover for my
Roadster. No, I know what you're thinking but sorry guys, she's very
happily
taken!
Now I have to take it to the local top shop to have it fitted. Never
having
owned a tonneau cover before, do I have it fitted with the top on and
down,
or should the top be completely removed before installing the cover? In
other words, once the tonneau is fitted, can I drive the car with the
top
down and the tonneau in place at the same time?
