Well after 7 years of painfully slow restoration (mostly I'm the slow part)
my roadster hit the road. Not painted yet. Got it registered last week and
finally got a chance to start the engine break-in. Put 60 miles on it.
Runs pretty rough and has flat spots in acceleration. Mechanic had
previously balanced and set gas/air mixture screws. I know the engine needs
to be run at different speeds and revs and I have not been pressing it at
all. Engine idles a bit high and I cannot get it to drop. Accelerator
cable was a bit long and grabbed the starter cable. Had to shut it off and
coast off a main road. All guages appear to be working. Gas guage seems to
take about 15 minutes before it registers a tank level. Odd? Amp meter
sits mid range on the charging side - sounds good. Pressure guage ranges
from 20 to ~ 40 psi. Probably okay for a new engine before the rings get
set. Engine temperature guage ran near the top of the scale for a while.
Checked the rad hoses and all were warm but not excessively. This would of
course not tell if the engine was hot, but, I do remember testing the
thermostat (160 Deg F) in a pot of water quite some time ago. Don't know if
the themostat was not opening or not but after some miles it settled at mid
range. That had me worried. Must check to insure mechanic put it back in
right. Are these guages finicky? Anyone out there have a similar break in
experience? Larry.
