David - you are not inviting any trouble at all.  I use Firefox (free),
AdAware (free), Norton ($), andPrevx1 (free).  I update weekly and scan
every couple of days and I never get popups - most of which are not related
to specific links but rather to adware already hiding on your computer.
Interestingly, though, the last 3 times I did an update from Microsoft, I
picked up malware or viruses (each of which the above stuff caught!).
