It has been a good roadster day around here.
First I went back to finish working on the ignition switch problem that
showed up a week or two ago. After taking the original tumbler assembly
apart I found that it probably could not be repaired by me. I had already
changed the steering column once for this problem and did not relish the
thought of doing that again for a repair that would only last a short time.
So I purchased an aftermarket ignition switch and started trying to figure
out how to attach it to the car in some way. The final decision was to
modify the original ignition switch casting and mount the new switch right
where the old switch had been. It came out just the way I wanted it to work
and look. I posted a photographic tech note under the electrical section of
my tech datsun2000.com web page. Maybe it will help someone else with a
similar problem.
Then I took my daughter over to my ex-wife's new house and she gave me a
bunch of old pictures she still had. Included in the pictures were the only
picture of SRL311-08311, which I purchased new in April of '68, and was
badly wrecked in August of '69 when a full size Chevy turned left into me
while I was moving at near 50 MPH. The only picture I have of my first
roadster is after the wreck. The roadster veered away from the Chevy and
hit a high cement curb at 35-40 MPH and stopped. Did not bounce back. Just
stopped. The seat belts held and my glasses were smashed on the windshield,
but I survived to walk away from the car with broken chest cartilage from
the shoulder harness. Take a look at the picture to see how these cars, at
least this one, hold up under some hard impact. The picture is now on the
opening page of my web site.
The other picture she gave me may be familiar to those of you NW members
with racing ties to ICSCC back to the late 60's when Bill Stevens was racing
his Scepter. I had the only professional picture of the car Bill ever knew
of taken at Westwood, near Vancouver, BC. I put together a we page with a
picture and description of the car under my Other Stuff pages. The Scepter
page is located at:
