Spedo problem

Hi All.

The speedometer in my roadster just started doing something weird.   
It's reading at least twice my actual speed and it's making a whining  
noise (like gears spinning very fast.)  I haven't changed anything.   
It wasn't doing it one day and it started doing it the next.

Any ideas about the reason for this and what I need to do to fix it?
