For what it's worth - Some time back I systematically removed, 
disassembled and cleaned all of the exterior lamp assemblies (turn, 
tail, brake). My collection of wire brushes and some sandpaper took 
care of the copious covering of surface rust. It made a world of 
difference, especially in the front turn signals. Not a lot of fun, 
but not an impossible task.
