Thanks to all who sent their versions of avoiding DC. We ended up coming
across 70 to Hancock, MD, then catching 522 south to Winchester. Took a jog
on 37 around Winchester to 81 south. Picked up 66 west to 17 and got back
on the old route when we reached 95 just north of Fredericksburg. It added
a few miles but the scenery was much better that what 495 around DC has to
offer. And the driver's stress level was greatly reduced.
Coming home, we stayed on 17 instead of taking 66 back to 81. This turned
out to be very scenic and very slow. A good part of that section of 17 is
only 45 mph. Either way, thanks to all that helped make this trip better.
Side note. Upon arriving back home Monday evening, we found out that my
mother-in-law had fallen and broke her hip Sunday morning. So we washed a
lot of cloths, repacked, and headed up to Flint, Michigan to a couple of
days. Her surgery went well and she should be released today and she is
determined to make a full recovery. I fell sorry for any doctor that tells
her otherwise!
