Does anyone in the vicinity of NYC or a few hundred miles from here have a
spare bare 5 main block for sale?
The new owner of my car told be that a lifter galley is too loose and the
lifter flops around so he may need a new block.
In the course of a few hundred miles after the tapping problem became evident
I ripped the motor out and took the oil pan off to have a look at what was
wrong. There apeared to be no visual damage to the cam or lifters and a stuck
valve in the head was discovered after the examination of the cam.
In the course of a few hundred miles the cam lobes on #1 were completely wiped
out as were the lifters. The extent of the damage was quite shocking as Mike
described it.
I'll try to go over to 'Datsun Mike's' house and take a few photos.
BTW, he was able to get the cam out 'in situ' by using magnets to hold up the
lifters. He removed the rad and grill and timing cover etc on the engine but
that was it.
