When making a contribution it may be well to remember that the Red Cross is
still negotiating its participation, the Salvation Army is already on the job.
Older members of my family remember leaving for WII. The Red Cross sold
coffee and doughnuts, the Salvation Army gave them away. An even more remote
ancestor was wounded at Belleau Woods. The Red Cross "gave" him a carton of
cigarettes. Around 1921 they sent him a bill.
