Not to be a party pooper, but you will have problems if you stick with
the stock regulator and wiring:
1) (unlikely) the regulator will have a problem supplying enough current
to the field winding. This will limit the alternator output and may
harm the regulator.
2) (given enough time, it will eventually happen) Some day, with the
new stereo on high, the high beams and driving lamps on, the heater
on, the wipers running, and a failing battery, you will pull the full
50 amps thru the 30 amp gauge and undersized wiring. If you're lucky
the gauge will pop like a fuse and leave you stranded. More likely,
the wiring in the dash will overheat and either smoke you out of the
car or catch fire and _then_ smoke you out of the car.
The original wiring is designed for 30 amps. Exceed it and eventually
it will rebel.
