Miata Seats

Well, I finally scored some Miata seats. They came out of a 1995 Miata M, so I
got speakers too.

I have a part on the seats that I'd like to know what it's function is.'

There is a sliding piece of metal bolted to one side of each of the seats. It
is bolted to one of the mounting slides and appears that it bolts somewhere
else to the rear and side of the seat. Anyone with a Miata able to identify
this items use?
