Greetings,

The restoration of the Datsun has finally come to the
engine/transmission and an interesting discovery was made. An earlier 3
main bearing R16 (most likely a salvage engine, once rebuilt) was
installed in what is otherwise a low mileage car (~50k, not confirmed).
I expected a 5 main bearing R16 since it is a 1968 (Engine No > 40001).
The engine does have a smog head installed.

So, I have a 1970 parts car with a seemingly intact R16. Since I have
no experience with either engine (both non running upon purchase),
should I go ahead and use the 3 main bearing R16 or the 5 main bearing
R16? I have read that both are strong engines each with their own
benefits.

I am compelled to use the 1970 motor because it is "more correct" for a
1968 1600.

Please advise,
