Your symptom sounds like a bad ballast resistor.  It is bypassed when 
the starter is engaged, so the car will fire, but then once you let go 
of the key, if the ballast resistor is bad the car will die.  You can 
test this by connecting the wires on both sides of the ballast resistor 
and seeing if it'll start.  Don't leave it like this for very long 
because you'll fry your points.  But if that works, then head down to 
your local NAPA or whatever and ask for a ballast resistor for an old 
Datsun.  They should be able to find something that's virtually 
identical to the one in the Roadster.
