Ed,

I have two spade connectors on my current starter, the new redux starter
only has one, I'm not sure if I understand the ground to bell housing, are
you refering the small wire that is attached to spade?

Thanks
Richard

Hi Richard,
You're right about there not being any labeling on the starter. That
really threw me for a loop. I was bothered by the fact it had two leads
but one only had a connection to the starter. Pat Horne made sense of it
when he said the solenoid is a weak spot so this lets us just replace
that piece instead of the whole starter.

I got mine from dean, but it's probably the same setup no matter what.
The Positive lead from the battery and the group of wires from the
harness connect to the top post on the solenoid. The only thing on the
bottom post is the wire that comes from the starter itself and it's
already there. The ground goes on the mounting bolt into the bell
housing and the spade terminal is just for the ignition lead.

I still have my fingers crossed, but so far I haven't had any
electrical problems and I was running some serious juice into the system
incorrectly. I even had some sparks and smoke. There are still a lot of
things I need to learn. The roadster has been my first foray into auto
mechanicing so I have a few years of basic stuff to catch up on.
Between, friends, family and the list i've managed to fix everything but
the transmission which I sent out to a shop, for fear of not being able
to get it back together.

I was fortunate that I had the motor out when I put mine in. The little
triangle of metal that sits behind the front wheel and blocks access to
the starter had been bent out of the way so it would not have been that
bad to get in. It's shorter than the stock 1600 starter so it fits
pretty good although everyone who saw mine thought it sat too close to
the header. They would have really paniced if the saw the old one in
there.

What a difference it makes though. I put a new ring gear on the
flywheel also, and what a difference. The motor sat for 3 months on the
front porch and as soon as I got it wired correctly it started on the
first crank.

Happy wireing.

Ed
