Some of the earliest work on the aero of drafting and towing was
performed by the SAE at Daytona, with NASCAR drivers of the late 1960s
--- skinny tires, big motors and blunt trauma aerodynamics overall (with
the exception of the Superbirds, of course).
From memory, a full tuck at less than 1/3 car length in trail got you
lowest total package drag (greater fineness ratio) for the best overall
tow for leader and trailer, while a 1/3-1/2 car width displacement at
1/3 car length in trail got the trailer the best aero tow while not
pushing/aiding the car in front. Great for those late lap slingshot
moves.
