I've always thought they BECOME matched sets after years of wear together.  Are 
they truly matched when they're new?  I know mine work better in one 
configuration. . .If I switch them, which I have done, one tends to "hang" a 
bit, and won't "thunk" at the bottom like they're supposed to.
