Lonestar "And your analogy to small block Chevrolet

engines hits a snag when, in Volkswagen-dom, you hit the Type IV."

O.K. I should have used BB Chevy ;-).

If you reread my SB Chevy analogy, I compared ALL type IV VW/ 914-4 engines
to SB Chevies.

Andy "The 914-6 that I autocrossed was an SM2 car that had a 911 motor swap.
It was fast, but the funky shifting tranny and relatively skinny tires hurt."

You should have been able to get bigger tire under her with "GT" flares and
the correct offset. We were using 7" rims under stock fenders. You are
correct about the FUNKY shifting, especially the early "rear shifter"
transmissions (914-6). FIRST gear is only usable from a standing start and
they break easily $$$$$. You need to convert to the "side shifter" mechanism
and convert second gear to "904" type, which you will use as first gear, then
lower 3,4,5 gears (these are all interchangeable with a good selection of
ratios). You end up with a "4-speed" car with a useable trans and even a
"STOCK" 914 will be much faster in an autocross.
