Hey, what are the head torque specs and is it different for head studs? I
think I've got a blown headgasket (oil in the coolant and temp began to rise
after X amount of driving). I'll do a compression test after re-torqueing
the head.
I had the carbs rebuilt and one of the throttle linkage bits had been bent.
I didn't know this, so after reinstalling the carbs, she idled a bit high
(like 2000 rpm). I didn't run her very long while trying to figure out what
was up. Then turned her off and fiddled. Started her again, fiddled. Turned
her off, found the bent throttle are link and fixed it. But during the
second fiddling session, I heard the engine tone change suddenly, and a bit
of a hiss tone. She ran fine after the linkage was righted, but in the 3rd
trial run down the road and back (the next day), the temp began rising
slowly to the point I shut her down before the needle went too high about a
mile and a half from home. Coasted mostly home the final mile, shutting the
engine down whenever possible, and parked her. Checked the coolant, a bit of
pressure in the relief tank. Popped the cap and found a few bits of blackish
goo circulating. Uh-oh.
I figure I'll retorque the head and do a compression test. If that checks
out, then change fluid and cross fingers. Suggestions?
