Hey Listers!
Today I was able to replace both a leaking heater core and a starter with a
bad solenoid. Paul Bauman once again offered the use of his place to work on
one of my cars as well as to have some barbecue and have fun. A special
thanks to Paul Bauman- truly a roadsterbud.
Before I get to the actually work done I will cover the attendees- Paul and
Pam Bauman, Tim Miner in his own very nice 67.5 2000, Erick Hokanson (Hope I
spelled your name right) in his 1969 Ford 302 V-8 conversion. We spent a lot
of time gawking at the engine with 4 inches of firewall removed so it would
fit. Fergus O'Farrell came by although he did not bring his roadster as he
brought his two month old Daughter Fiona O'Farrell.
Anyhoo, With the trade of a tested heater core for my leaky one that I will
have recored for him we got started and took out the old core. The really
hard part of this procedure is to remove the heater control valve. It's a
two man job. Swapped out the heater core and put him back in. No more leaks.
Dry as your granddaddy's pate inside the heater core. Thank you Paul.
Now, on to the gear reduction starter. It is pretty much the same length as
a standard U20 starter and Paul had very little problems getting the old one
out so the GR starter fit right in. The only issue was the because of the
orientation of the solenoid on the gear reduction starter. the terminals
were horizontal to the ground as opposed to vertical. This caused the lead
running from the battery to be about an inch short. (My battery is in the
trunk.) A quick trip to the auto parts store to get an extension (properly
insulated) and a little fiddling with the terminals and the car started
right up.
All in all I like the GR stater. It seems be a much smoother motor and turns
the car right over.
So although I had told Lou Smaldino I would not be coming to Solvang this
year, I may just have to reconsider.
A great day and the car is happy,
Andrew Murphy
