one more suspension question

I have one side back together except for the side rod/steering rod
connection. not sure of the mechanics term for them. I have new dust boots
to install but I cannot seem to get them to slip into the groove so I can
install the retaining ring. the old one looks the same and fits (badly torn
however). does the boot slip into the groove once they nut is tightened
down? any ideas would be great. I have about an hour invested in trying to
get it to work.
