Just a post to thank those who replied..Problem was corrected by dismantling
and cleaning the ends of the ballast resistor itself...Sorry ,I allowed myself
to be fooled as it didn't show up in a voltmeter check....Thanks again...

Subject: 1600--Start and Stop-Help
Restoration-end in sight ! But== after replacing rings,bearings,carb parts
from Dean, points and condenser, wires , and plugs, the engine starts fine with
almost no cranking...runs perfectly for 2-3 minutes, then dies(no coughs ,
sputtering or backfires), just quits. after maybe 1/2 minute it starts easily
,runs for maybe 10-20 seconds,then quits.....next AM same cycle..runs 2-3
min, quits..then runs 20-30.(all this in cold garage,35-45 deg. F-no trouble
starting in spite of cold). " Runs" means fast idle, also increased speed.
1. No air leaking in ,, line from gas tank to filter, filter to pump. filter
remains full,no air.(tank cap removed to eliminate this as a problem)
2. Disconnected line to carbs.pumped gas into can by cranking..pumps OK
3.SU carbs not tuned...idle mixture screwed to stop, then backed off 2+ turns
I don'tknow if this is a clue but when running(no air filter) and the intake
of the front carb covered, immediate stoppage occurs, as you would expect, but
when this is done to the rear carb, stoppage occurs but not as immediately as
the front.
Frustrating.. I don't know whether to shoot myself or go bowling...any help
would be much appreciated.
