Brian,
I did this in my car when I put the 2000 engine in it.
Aussie 67.5 2000s had the alternator on the driver's side. On
US cars the pump for the pollution control was on the
distributor side and can be used as an alternator bracket.
Extending the wiring is no big deal. If enough cable isn't
already wrapped into the loom there are only about 3 wires to
extend. Wrap it into the loom that goes in front of the
radiator. Use the Bosch version of an early (straight 6cyl)
Holden Commodore alternator with inbuilt regulator. I went
through 2 "other" brands that cracked due to engine
vibrations.
Lou Mondello may have a lead on some brackets.

the engine with an alternator in situ.
