You don't HAVE to take them off but if you don't you won't know what kind of
condition they're in.
I'm glad I took mine apart because I discovered that one of them wasn't
getting enough grease so it had started to wear down the threads on the
spindle.
Chris Coker's suggestion of using a vise, socket, breaker bar, and extension
sounds like a winner to me.
