I have been looking at various possible swaps. I
wouldn't go with the Miata. It is a rather
underpowered engine. I drove one and was totally under
whelmed. I greatly prefer the power of the 2000.
However, given the expense of parts and difficulty
finding folks who can work on them I believe I will 
go with the Ford 2.3. These can be built up relatively
inexpensively. They are reliable and go hundreds of
thousands of miles in Mustangs. If one can find it one
could go with the Trubo version that was in the
T-Bird.  They had a reputation for problem cams but
aftermarket cams are available to solve the problem. 
However, to avoid the issues of fuel injection I plan
to go with a carbureted engine.  These engines have
been used very successfully in racing Rangers and
Mustangs. It looks like the engine will fit with few
modifications.
