Unfortunately the ammeter serves as a fuse for the entire car if a surge
takes place and wipes the ammeter out.
You'll need to replace it with a another one as I really don't think it can
be repaired.
There must be a short somewhere - a big short. I don't recommend replacing
the ammeter until you find the short. Use a fuse holder and 30 amp fuse in
place of the ammeter until you find out the cause.
