the alternator terminals are: -
E for Earth.
A for Active (or charge wire).
F for Field (the supply of battery 12V to the Field Coil of the
alternator).
N for Neutral (the centre point of the star wound coil of the
alternator).
The Regulator terminals are: -
E, A, F, N as above and connected one for one to the Alternator
terminals of the same designation.
IG for IGnition (the detection of battery 12V when the IGnition switch
is turned to the ON or START position).
L for the Lamp (or Charge Lamp) on the instrument panel. Lamp is
connected between the L and IG terminals on the regulator.
It is the regulators function to interpret the various voltages and
adjust the field current of the alternator to produce a useful
charging current for the battery.
That current is the flow caused by the potential difference between
the battery voltage compared to the alternator output voltage.
These are normally 12V and 14.5V respectively, resulting in a charge
current of usually 3-5A.
