Japan Domestic Market engines are required by law to be replaced at low milage
like 35,000. There are thousands of cars that get a motor transplant at 35,000
miles and the old motors find their way to America. Since Japan taxes based on
engine size the japanese generally have high output small displacement motors.
That is one reason the Japanese don't make 400hp V8 motors like in the Z06
Corvette. Instead, they make a 350hp 2000cc Subaru WRX and similar. That is
why JDM motors are desirable. They sometimes have higher output than the
American market siblings. A good example is the SR20 which has much more
horsepower in Japanese form.
