No, generally if the battery goes bad the ammeter will try to charge the battery and be in the "+" side. Sounds like it's an alt problem. Make sure all the wiring is good and none fell off. Of course it could be a bad voltage regulator. Open the regulator and clean the points with fine sandpaper - they do go bad.
