David,
Did the PO tell you what kind of rebuild he did? What parts he replaced with
new
parts in the engine? Did he use new chains, gears, or tensioners in part or all
of the rebuild? If the head was shaved did he put shims under the cam towers to
raise the cam into the correct position? The timing components are a major
consideration for any rebuild of these engines.
That ticking sound is what is known to 2L owners with U20 engines as the Death
Rattle. I could try to explain the problem, but Gordon Glasgow has done it so
well I will just put a link to his page here:
http://www.gordon-glasgow.org/Evil_L.asp. while you are visiting Gordon's page
take the time to explore and bookmark it. You will come back again and again.
As long as your chain is too slack, either from stretching, defective chain
tighteners, or bad oil pump, I would seriously consider not driving the car. At
the very least you could jump a tooth on a timing gear, which I have done in
moderate city traffic and had to replace timing chains and valves. Or you could
actually do some serious damage by having the L break off.
