Hi all, I ran across your mailing list through the Wyoming/Colorado Roadster
Owners Club (http://www.wycroc.org/) page and decided I'd better just take
some question's I've got to some live people. I'm already knee-deep in
Datsuns, I have a 1978 280Z that I'm about to drop an L28ET from a 280ZXT
into, but I've come across a chance to own a 2000 Roadster for pretty cheap
(there are two available apparently from this particular seller). I heard
about the deal through a good friend of mine (let's call him Tom) with a
1600, and he wants to buy one car to drop the U20 and tranny into his car.
Now, here are my options:
1) I can buy the rest of the 2000 that Tom is buying to swap the motor out
of, and Tom has an L20B that I can have for very little with goodies like
twin Weber 45DCOE's, a hot cam, ported head, new pistons etc. etc. Tom will
help me fabricate whatever is necessary to physically mount the engine and
transmission.
2) I can buy the other 2000 for sale, which will probably cost me more
initially, plus that other car is missing its transmission. I understand
that you can't use a regular 1600 Roadster tranny because the starter is on
the wrong side, and the same applies for the more common L-series
transmissions.
3) I can swap a more modern KA24, SR20, ??? into what's left of Tom's 2000,
similar to (1) except more expensive :-D
I'd like to have a "real" 2000 so option (2) is attractive to me, but I'm
also a "poor college student" and the sale of the old Honda I acquired to
drive while working on the Z has to fund the purchase of my next daily
driver, and U20 parts and transmissions seem expensive to me. How much can
a used U20 transmission be had for, or another transmission that would work?
And how much will the U20 cost to rebuild (assuming I'll have to just
re-ring it and get new bearings)? Sorry for sounding like such a newbie
here, I put most of my info-gathering time into the Z and have just started
looking into Roadsters. Thanks!
