I think the device you are talking about is a "voltage stabilisor".
The electrical instruments run on a voltage somewhat less than the
battery float voltage (nominally 13.8V)
and it is the job of the can to feed a stabilised voltage to the
gauges, 8V I believe.
If this device fails or loses the plot, the temp, fuel and any other
purely electrical gauge will not read correctly.
It is a good place to start if the gauges are not functioning
correctly.
Also check/replace any fuses that appear to be suspect due to age
corrosion or damage.

Welcome to the list -- you can either make yourself crazy, or find
someone
with a 66 or 67 nearby and take a look at their car with a video or
digital
camera and take 100s of pictures.

There is a part under the dash to the right to the steering wheel on
my 66
that looks like a relay, but I don't think that it what it really is,
and
when it is disconnected some of the instruments don't work. The
venders have
them, I think. But check to see if it is there and hooked up. Do you
have
the wiring diagram, it is on the web.

Anyone on the list close to Ken and Tammy?

Or if you want, perhaps someone with a similar year can send you
pictures,
but its best to see one running and in person.
