The clutch has nothing to do with the tranny not shifting as long as the
motor is off that is. I suspect someone disassembled the rear housing and
didn't line up the shifter shaft correctly upon reinstallation and thus it's
not engaging the shifter rods.

Didn't you mention previously that it wouldn't shift into any gear?
