Today I drove a Datsun 2000 for the first time in 29 years. And the
experience was almost all that I remember. I am told it has been 15
years or so for the car to be driven. After breaking down and ordering
new master cylinders for the clutch and brakes I was able to finish that
job and actually see if this car could be driven. With carbs way out of
whack and won't idle down, no hood, an oil leak between the head and
timing cover that smokes like crazy on the exhaust manifold, and an
electrical problem that presented itself in the starter wiring, it had
lots of power and no strange front end noises, no pull left or right, or
any other problems. My oldest daughter who insists on driving only
manual transmissions is complaining about the large amount to clutch
pedal pressure. I told her that if the car has a competition suspension
under it, it only makes sense that the clutch is also competition. If
she is going to drive this car she is going to have to get used to
it....
Lots of work left, and now a new electrical issue around the ignition
switch to chase, but at least I met my first goal of driving it before I
tear it apart for interior, body, and paint work.
