The only way I got mine out was through the thermostat housing and using a
long drift punch to knock it out. I tried soaking it, I tried heat I tried
using vice grips and on and on. I ended up punching it out.

When reinstalling use some plumbers string on the concave part and a lot of
antiseize too. The string will seal any leak that may happen as it expands
when it gets wet. Just use a few strands to wrap the sealing surface
however.
