No need to drop the engine but I would remove the oil pan and clean it out.
I would also prime the engine before startup by removing the dizzy and cast
iron stand it sits on and spin the oil pump counter-clockwise to prime the
pump using an electric drill. Before doing so, set the timing at TDC (when
the rotor is pointing at the #1 cylinder).
I would also clean the carbs thoroughly and get rid of any shellac.
It would also be beneficial to change the fluids in the tranny and rear. I
would drop the gas tank too and clean out that as well - Eastwood makes a
kit to clean and paint the insides of the tank.
BTW, don't rebuild the brakes just replace them and don't forget the rubber
lines too.
