actually - it's when there is no change that you need to really worry - no
change means that carbie ain't carrying it's share of the load and something
is askew.
Just like when you said you pulled the front 2 plug wires with no change -
those cyl's are already "out of the loop" and not firing off correctly.
With 2 cyls off, I'd suspect carb problems before ign. Try checking float
level - too low can cause things to starve out - a poss. cause of the
coughing & sputtering you mention. Got the carbs synched ? You said you
recently swapped them out - is important to get everything set back up again
correctly. Good linkage setting for one carb may not be good for the next
one.
If not carbs....
How'd ya check for spark at the plugs ? Easiest way to do it is w/ an
inductive timing light - just clip it on each one of the wires and check for
regular "flashing". If you were taking off each wire & grounding you may not
get a good picture if it's *regular* spark or not.
