Ugh! That is painful to see. Trees are very unforgiving objects. Hope she is
doing well. Several years ago I was going through a wrecking year and saw a
forest service car that had clearly hit a very large tree at a considerable
speed. The tree had penetrated almost to the fire wall right in front of the
driver. I walked around to the passenger compartment expecting to see
considerable interior damage. What amazed me was that everything was pretty
much intact... the steering wheel was relatively unmoved, the seat was unbroken,
and the foot well had only moved in slightly. The door even opened and closed,
though not perfectly. On further inspection, it was clear that the engine had
dropped down and gone under as designed, and the steering column and seat had
done their job of staying put. The make of car? Volvo... an older wagon at
that. Very impressive. I guess they do build a safe car after all, even if the
old ones look, well, somewhat fashion challenged.
