Well I spent the weekend changing the engine and transmission on my 69
2L. All went well until I came to the realization that you can't get
the engine out with the manifold still mounted to the head. Drat!!
Well at least I can use the factory exhaust manifold rather than the
header that won't fit the exhaust system. While I was checking e-mail
for the torque settings for the pressure plate bolts I saw the results
of Gordon's outing. I am glad he is all right, but I am sorry to see
such a beautiful car damaged. The next e-mail was his answer to my
question. Thank you Gordon for being there, even when you are hurting
yourself.
Putting the engine/tranny in without help is an experience. Using a
floor jack and engine hoist I managed to to it in about 3 hours
yesterday evening and worked on details today and hung the old engine on
the engine stand to see what made the screaming squeal when I started it
July 4th. When I separated the transmission from the engine I removed I
found a brand new clutch disk, pressure plate, and throwout bearing.
How the PO got that stuff in there without cleaning anything up I will
never know. I swear he sprayed the bolts with grease...
Now to order the manifold gasket and maybe I will have it on the road
NEXT weekend.
Oh, I am having trouble getting the spedo cable into the tranny. Is
there a trick, or what do I have to figure out to make it fit?
