Rust, rust and rust. Rear wheelarches, forward section of
the sills, to the footwell and top inside of the fenders where
mud buildup is common. The mechanics of the car is strong
like a truck, the same as 120-series and you can buy all
spare parts you want, with a few small exceptions. Volvo
donated parts and a lot of the tooling to the Swedish P1800
club some years back. Most difficult is to find parts for ES
models, whatever is different from the earlier model. A lot
of the spare parts are reproduced locally in Sweden. Early
cars had Lucas lights. E-engine (Bosch D-jetronic) is primitive
and thirsty but gives good performance. They all leak water
around the door windows when you wash them.
Anyway, rust and more rust is the big enemy. Not worse
than any other car from the period but it's what put the
cars on the junkyard if any.
Volvo had tuning kits available for them through their
competition service in the 1960's - early 70's. The 140
and 170 hp kits had twin Solex 45's. (now I want one!!!)
